This post and experiment took me a little longer than expected so i hope the wait was worth it. The following paragraphs are entries in a log that i took for three days after figuring out how to perform the experiment. Enjoy!

Toda I began the experiment. Last night i took a plastic container and filled it with water and froze it overnight. My theory was that since I lived in a hot part of the country the ice could be put in my birdbath and in theory refill it while i was away as the water originally in the bird bath evaporates. As i put the ice in the birdbath the block cracked down the middle. The reflections and sound that the crackling ice makes was in theory supposed to attract more birds.

So i just got home and there is still water in the bath, but the water level is slightly lower. I checked my camera and there seemed to be slightly more birds there than usual but not a significant difference. Tomorrow i’ll use a bigger container to keep the water level consistent.

Got up a little bit earlier today to find the bath was a lot more dirty. not sure why there was no algae but i pressure washed it and refilled it so that helped. other than that everything was normal.

My school started serving lunch 10 minutes ago and i checked my phone for messages to find my mom texted me a picture of a bird cleaning itself in my birdbath and her asking what it was. I guess it was pretty successful because the ice was about 3/4 melted and the water level seemed that same as this morning so yay. [if you were wondering it was a white crowned sparrow, which my mom said is very pretty and is now her 2nd favorite bird behind sellers jay, which she saw at lake taho last summer]

I checked my birdbath right when i got home to make sure that it was still full which it was, so i guess it fits my hypothesis. I also assume my mom saw me go outside with my bins because she started up again talking excitedly about the bird she saw. I guess doing one more field test wouldn’t hurt.

Today’s my brother’s 14th birthday so happy birthday A-Dog [as we like to call him) *blows birthday horn]. I managed to get up even earlier than before and i decided to move the birdbath into more cover because it was windy last night and it blew dirt into the bath [im assuming thats what happened the other day], but again everything normal.

The birdbath was still full when i got home today so i guess my experiment was a success. I highly suggest it for people living in a hot climate year round as it keeps your bath full all day.
